Herbal Teas Can Contribute to Cavities 

Recent research in London, published in the British Dental Journal, has shown that sipping fruit teas and other acidic drinks can contribute to tooth erosion. Here is the press release of the British Dental Journal article; article;

"Sipping acidic drinks such as fruit teas and flavored water can wear away teeth and damage the enamel, an investigation by scientists has shown. The team from King's College in London said that drinking them between meals and holding them in your mouth for too long increased the risk of tooth erosion from acid. The British Dental Journal article looked at the diets of 300 people with severe erosive tooth wear. It said the problem was increasing as people snacked more.

Fruit squashes, cordials, fruit teas, diet drinks, sugared drinks and flavoured water are all acidic and can cause wear and tear to teeth, the researchers said. And continuously sipping or holding these drinks in the mouth before swallowing increased the risk of tooth erosion.

Dr Saoirse O'Toole, the lead study author, from King's College London Dental Institute, said: "If you drink things for long periods of time, greater than five minutes, or if you nibble on fruit for several minutes rather than eating them as a whole fruit - these are things that can really damage your teeth.

"If you're going to have an apple as a snack at lunchtime, then try not to have anything acidic later on in the evening. If you are going to have a glass of wine in the evening, then don't have your fruit tea in the morning. Just balance things in your diet."

Russ Ladwa, who chairs the British Dental Association's health and science committee, said of acidic drinks: "Having them with a meal helps to minimize the damage because chewing food increases the production of saliva, which is alkaline and acts a buffer to dilute acidic foods and drinks."

Tooth Erosion - The Facts

It is a progressive loss of the hard substance of a tooth by chemical processes where bacteria are NOT involved - ie. this is NOT TOOTH DECAY. The acidity of the food or drinks is critical, rather than the sugar content - (bacteria, along with sugar, cause tooth decay not erosion). Diet, lifestyle choices, the environment and in some cases medication can increase the risk. Using fluoride toothpastes or rinses and modifying your diet can reduce the risk of erosion." Wine Extract can Help Prevent Cavities

Wine Extract can help Prevent Cavities in Teeth

In the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, scientists looked into whether wine polyphenols might be good for oral health.

Researchers compared the effects of polyphenols from red wine against grape seed and red wine extract supplements on bacteria that stick to teeth and cause dental plaque and cavities. They found the wine polyphenols and extracts all reduced the bacteria's ability to stick to the teeth.

If they combined the polyphenols with a "good" bacteria - Streptococcus dentisani - the polyphenols were even better at inhibiting the bad cavity-causing bacteria. This could lead to new dental treatments in the near future to prevent cavities.

Best Whitening Toothpaste

I get asked about the best whitening toothpaste - A LOT. And nowadays there are so many toothpastes available, with many of them claiming to have a whitening effect on your teeth. There seem to be a lot of TV adverts going on at the moment, particularly for the Oral B product, 3D White. So I decided to test out several of the "whitening" toothpastes myself again, to see if much had changed since my original review update a year ago.


No change in my top recommended toothpaste! Although some aspects of packaging and presentation have changed, there is no getting away from the fact that BlanX White Shock Toothpaste is STILL my favorite whitening toothpaste, for several reasons.
